Renowned watch brand Casio has made a significant stride into the virtual realm with the introduction of its latest initiative, the VIRTUAL G-SHOCK project.
This undertaking is geared towards fostering a community that serves as a bridge between G-SHOCK, a resilient line of timepieces — designed to withstand mechanical stress, shocks, and vibrations — and its user base.
The inaugural phase of this project involves the launch of a non-fungible token (NFT) pass collection. This collection will comprise a total of 15,000 limited-edition G-SHOCK CREATOR PASS NFTs, which will be distributed at no cost, beginning September 23, 2023.
The NFTs will be created on Polygon, a “sidechain” scaling solution that operates in conjunction with the Ethereum blockchain.
Holders of these passes will gain access to participate in events and collaborative projects within the VIRTUAL G-SHOCK community.
The pass will initially boast a neutral design that will be shaped collaboratively by the community. Among these collaborative endeavors is the G-SHOCK CREATOR PASS Color Design Contest, a competition to determine the pass’s design, encompassing colors, materials, and patterns. Community members will cast their votes to determine the winning entry, which will become the actual pass design.
This announcement closely follows Casio’s submission of a trademark application, signaling its intention to embrace the metaverse and NFTs.
This move aligns with the recent initiatives of other watch companies. In February, Hublot, a Swiss luxury watchmaker, unveiled a distinctive collection of 13 watches linked to NFTs, developed in collaboration with artist Takashi Murakami. Furthermore, in December 2022, Timex partnered with Daz 3D to introduce a personalized, limited-edition line of watches accompanied by linked NFTs.
