Casio, the renowned watchmaker, has taken steps towards integrating non-fungible tokens (NFTs) and the metaverse by submitting a trademark application.
The application, filed on August 22, 2023, with the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), outlines Casio’s intention to provide virtual items such as watches, clothing, accessories, hairstyles, and avatar animation packages.
The application also highlights Casio’s interest in offering digital files authenticated by NFTs.
The company is also gearing up to leverage cutting-edge technologies by providing images, audio, music, and videos for both virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) experiences.
Michael Kondoudis, a trademark attorney specializing in web3-related filings, shared the news about Casio’s trademark application via X (formerly Twitter).
This move echoes a trend within the watch industry, as other brands have also ventured into the realm of Web3. For instance, in November 2022, Rolex submitted a trademark application signaling its aspirations to enter the NFT and metaverse spaces.
This development aligns with recent endeavors from other watch companies. In February, Hublot, a Swiss luxury watchmaker, unveiled a unique collection of 13 watches tied to NFTs, crafted in collaboration with artist Takashi Murakami. Additionally, in December 2022, Timex partnered with Daz 3D to introduce a personalized, limited edition line of watches accompanied by linked NFTs.
