China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), in collaboration with four other key departments, has unveiled a comprehensive three-year action plan, aimed at propelling the industrial innovation and development of the metaverse from 2023 to 2025.
The plan spotlights the potential of the metaverse and its prospective applications spanning various sectors — ranging from household appliances to automotive and aerospace industries.
The roadmap laid out in this three-year strategy is anchored on five fundamental pillars. These pillars encompass harnessing and implementing cutting-edge metaverse technologies; the use of three-dimensional interactive metaverse applications in industrial settings; crafting immersive digital experiences for daily life; advancing network and computing technologies (including the evolution from 5G to 6G); and ensuring the utmost security and trustworthiness within the Chinese metaverse ecosystem.
The strategy is complemented by a series of initiatives and measures, encompassing pivotal technological enhancements, nurturing the metaverse ecosystem, empowering industries, and reinforcing the foundational infrastructure.
Some of these initiatives encompass the exploration of innovative metaverse applications tailored to diverse industries and the integration of critical industrial processes into the metaverse environment. Additionally, there are plans to establish a robust system for evaluating and testing trusted metaverse products, along with the development of a cutting-edge computing infrastructure.
This latest unveiling underscores the unwavering commitment of the Chinese government to the metaverse and associated technologies, recognizing their pivotal role in China’s future development.
Notably, in August, the Chinese government proposed the integration of its social credit system with the metaverse, sparking extensive debates on issues of privacy and control within virtual realms. Furthermore, earlier this year witnessed the inauguration of China’s first regulated NFT marketplace, marking another milestone in the country’s journey into the Web3 landscape.
