McDonald’s Hong Kong has taken a leap into the metaverse to celebrate a significant milestone — the 40th anniversary of its beloved chicken nuggets, the McNuggets.
The immersive experience unfolds within the metaverse platform The Sandbox. Here, users are invited to explore a McNuggets-themed virtual realm, where they can not only partake in games but also undertake missions to earn exclusive rewards.
At the heart of this virtual celebration lies the opportunity for users to retrace the journey of McNuggets over the past four decades. Through interactive elements, users can delve into the rich history of this iconic product, as they traverse a virtual art gallery showcasing its evolution and impact on the fast-food landscape.
For global users, there’s an additional incentive — the chance to win the native token of The Sandbox, known as SAND. Other prizes include memorabilia and mystery boxes.
Hong Kong users are also in for some real-world rewards. Among the prizes are the opportunity to enjoy 365 days of free Chicken McNuggets and a coupon for a 6-piece Chicken McNuggets meal.
This endeavor is just the latest in a series of forward-thinking moves by the world’s leading food chain. In 2022, McDonald’s set its sights on the metaverse, filing ten trademark applications for a virtual restaurant that would offer home delivery services. The same year, the company followed up with another trademark application for “McDelivery,” further solidifying its commitment to exploring new frontiers in the digital realm.
In January of this year, the fast-food giant collaborated with Karen X Cheng to ring in the Lunar New Year with a campaign that ingeniously combined elements of the metaverse, augmented reality, and artificial intelligence.
