Mastercard has unveiled a non-fungible token (NFT)-powered trivia game for the UEFA Champions League tournament in collaboration with crypto payment company MoonPay.
Accessible via a free-to-claim NFT pass minted on the Polygon blockchain, the game allows NFT holders to engage in live quizzes. These quizzes evaluate participants’ understanding of the UEFA Champions League, covering historical facts and statistics, and offer chances to win various prizes.
The rewards are categorized into three tiers — Trivia Round Winners, Runners-Up Prizes, and the Grand Prize.
Trivia Round Winners, awarded to winners of each of the 9 rounds of the trivia quiz, include two tickets for the UEFA Champions League 2024/2025 Group Stage match. Runners-Up Prizes, given to the third and second place players on the leaderboard after the trivia quiz, consist of official match Red and Yellow cards along with two tickets for the UEFA Champions League 2024/2025 Group Stage match.
The Grand Prize, awarded to the player securing first place in the leaderboard, comprises two tickets for the UEFA Champions League 2024 finals match and the “Share the Love” digital collectible.
NFT Passes are already available for claim on Mastercard’s “Pass to Priceless” platform. The competition will begin 30 minutes before Tuesday night’s UEFA Champions League matches, starting on February 13, and will run until the June 1 final.
This development follows Mastercard’s October 2023 collaboration with MoonPay to explore Web3 marketing opportunities, with a focus on enhancing experiential marketing and redefining customer engagement.
Nonetheless, Mastercard’s foray into the Web3 space began in January 2023 with the introduction of the Web3-based “Mastercard Artist Accelerator” program. In July 2023, the company released NFTs of new singles from five program participants, further solidifying its presence in the digital realm.
