FC Barcelona’s latest move into the world of digital art sees the exhibit of two of its non-fungible tokens (NFTs) — “In a Way, Immortal” and “Empowerment” — at the Moco Museum in Barcelona, Spain.
These NFTs are showcased in two dedicated digital art rooms within the museum, open for public viewing from April 25 to June 25, with plans to extend the exhibition to Amsterdam as well.
Part of the larger “Masterpiece” collection, these NFTs celebrate iconic moments and players in FC Barcelona’s history.
The “In a Way, Immortal” NFT, revealed in 2022, pays homage to Johan Cruyff’s legendary “impossible goal” against Atletico Madrid in 1973. Auctioned through Sotheby’s, it fetched nearly $700,000.
On the other hand, the “Empowerment” NFT, launched last year, honors Alexia Putellas’ remarkable performance in the Champions League semi-final against Wolfsburg, where she scored two pivotal goals.
An inaugural event for the exhibition took place yesterday, attended by Elena Fort, FC Barcelona’s vice-president of Institutional Area, alongside club executives and representatives.
It also welcomed the artists and creators of the NFTs, including Eric Sas and Alan Company, who collaborated on the artwork dedicated to Johan Cruyff, and representatives from World of Women and Rhiana Madeline, the creator of the piece Empowerment.
“For FC Barcelona, it is a matter of pride to be able to have an exhibition in a museum as renowned as the Moco Museum, giving continuity to the Club’s clear strategic commitment to adopting technology and innovation,” mentioned Fort in a statement.
Indeed, the club has been an early adopter of Web3 technologies, spearheading multiple initiatives in the space, some with sustainability goals.
For instance, in May 2023, FC Barcelona partnered with Plastiks to launch the “Unleash Your Passion” NFT collection. Each purchase contributed to removing 35,000,000 kilograms of plastic waste from the environment.
