Japanese video game company Square Enix has affirmed its commitment to Web3 expansion and metaverse integration for 2024.
In a letter dated January 1, Takashi Kiryu, Square Enix’s president and representative director, reflected on the challenges and opportunities of 2023.
Kiryu highlighted the growing influence of technologies like artificial intelligence (AI) and those associated with Web3, emphasizing the rising interest in the virtual world.
“These insights have guided me in determining our growth trajectory and laying the groundwork to bring that vision to life,” stated Kiryu in the letter.
Given the growing adoption and utility of these technologies, Square Enix intends to further incorporate virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) to enhance the immersive and realistic experiences offered to users in content and games.
The letter also outlines the company’s key investment focus for the year, mentioning blockchain entertainment/Web3, AI, and the cloud.
This year’s letter builds upon the previous one, reaffirming Square Enix’s commitment to non-fungible tokens (NFTs) and Web3 ambitions.
The company has been actively involved in the Web3 landscape, with a particular emphasis on exploring opportunities that resonate with the community.
In 2022, Square Enix introduced its first NFT project, Symbiogenesis. This game, featuring a 6-chapter story-based digital realm, was unveiled gradually throughout the year, engaging the community through social media quizzes and riddles before its public release last month.
The disclosed intentions in the letter suggest the potential further development of Symbiogenesis and the initiation or expansion of other Web3-related initiatives. Notably, the Web3 market, particularly the NFT sector, has experienced a surge since November 2023, setting a positive tone for the new year.
