Following a reflection on 2022, Square Enix’s President Yosuke Matsuda outlines plans for 2023 in his New Year’s letter; on the NFT and Web3 front, the company appears to be sticking to its guns.
After mentioning the macroeconomic challenges in 2022 – geopolitical conflicts and inflation – the President goes on to retrace the company’s achievements and future plans.
Blockchain entertainment development remains the company’s focus. Despite the volatility that has affected NFTs and cryptocurrencies over the past year, the Japanese government’s plans seem to encourage it; the recently signed “Priority Policy Program for Realizing a Digital Society” plan includes wording supporting the Web3 concept, including the implementation of NFTs based on blockchain technology.
As of present, Square Enix is working on several blockchain games based on original IPs, some of which were disclosed last year and others that will be revealed this year.
“We hope that blockchain games will transition to a new stage of growth in 2023,” writes president Matsuda.
Despite being the 20th anniversary of Enix and Square’s merger, 2023 is also set to be the year for the debut of Square Enix’s ‘SYMBIOGENESIS’ NFT project, announced in November and planned to debut in spring 2023.
