Serum City, a non-fungible token (NFT) game developed by Faraway game studio and Web3 firm Novel Labs in collaboration with Yuga Labs, has now been opened to the public.
The announcement of the game’s launch was made by Faraway on February 1 via a post on X (Twitter).
Described as a play-to-earn, narrative-driven city-building game, Serum City is set in the Mutant Cartel World and incorporates NFT assets from Yuga Labs’ Mutant Ape Yacht Club (MAYC), Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC), and other collections.
Currently, the game is open to BAYC, MAYC, Mutant Hound, and Mutant Cartel Oath holders, who can connect their wallets to claim passes required for entry. These passes determine their in-game base and associated crafting abilities.
Unveiled in April 2023, Serum City is the first game outside of Yuga Labs powered by Ape Coin. The game encourages social trading economies among players to progress and is organized into seasons, with each three-month season introducing evolving gameplay mechanics, new storylines, characters, and communities. Each season also expands access to more players.
This collaboration between Yuga Labs and Faraway follows the success of their previous release, Dookey Dash, a skill-based mint game requiring players to run as far as possible as difficulties progress.
Yuga Labs has been actively expanding its presence in the gaming industry. In March 2022, the company raised $450 million in funding for “Otherside,” an NFT-powered gaming metaverse. Since its opening, Otherside has completed two Trips with the participation of over 10,000 players.
In July 2023, Yuga Labs acquired Roar Studios, a music and metaverse startup, as part of its extensive vision for the Otherside metaverse. By the end of December 2023, Yuga Labs’ Otherside metaverse project secured the highest NFT land sales in 2023.
