ElmonX, a digital collectible platform, has announced plans to release Edvard Munch’s renowned artwork, “The Scream” 1895 lithograph, as a non-fungible token (NFT).
“The Scream” has several versions, including two in paint, two in pastels, and a lithograph. The upcoming NFT release by ElmonX features the lithograph version, displaying the iconic figure on a bridge with the inscription “Geschrei” — translated to “scream” — in German.
This particular lithograph, currently housed in The Art Institute of Chicago, was created using a printmaking technique where the artist draws or paints directly onto a stone or metal plate, enabling the production of multiple copies.
ElmonX secured permission from Bridgeman Images to digitize and offer the artwork as an NFT.
A total of 780 NFT editions will be available for purchase, with 36 reserved for ElmonX and two earmarked for whitelist winners from an ElmonX Discord event.
The “The Scream 1895 (litho)” NFTs, minted on the Ethereum blockchain, will be sold through OpenSea at a price of 0.075 ETH each, equivalent to approximately $235, starting Friday, March 1st at 9 am PT.
Buyers of the NFTs will gain exclusive access to view the artwork in augmented reality (in 3D) by connecting their wallet to ElmonX’s website.
This isn’t the first instance of Munch’s artwork being featured in NFT releases. In August 2023, “The Scream” was also part of Coca-Cola’s “Masterpiece” NFT collection on the Base blockchain, merging classic and contemporary art in eight distinct digital collectibles. In October 2023, Club Mahindra introduced an NFT collection featuring iconic paintings by Munch, as well as Van Gogh and Da Vinci.
