Bpost, also known as the Belgian Post Group, has announced the release of stamps paired with non-fungible tokens (NFTs).
The physical stamps will function like any regular stamp and will be valid for international mail. Each stamp will be accompanied by a digital twin as an NFT, which can be collected and exchanged digitally.
Chris Peeters, CEO of bpostgroup, stated, “By combining philately tradition with blockchain technology, we are offering our customers a new way to collect and trade postage stamps, which is both innovative and secure.”
The initiative is a collaboration with Austria’s Österreichische Post, PostNL in the Netherlands, and POST Luxembourg. These postal services have already released NFT stamps between 2019 and 2023.
The stamps are set to be released this autumn on October 21, with more details about their design to be revealed in September.
This isn’t the first instance of a postal service launching NFT stamps. Last year, Deutsche Post, Germany’s national post office, introduced NFT stamps with its “Historic Buildings” series, featuring iconic German landmarks.
Two months ago, Ghana Post marked the 25th coronation anniversary of Otumfuo Osei Tutu II with commemorative stamps linked to NFTs, celebrating his contributions to Ghana’s development.
