During a session at South By Southwest, Mark Zuckerberg announced that Meta would soon add non-fungible tokens (NFTs) to Instagram, saying: “We’re working on bringing NFTs to Instagram in the near term.” Then, he continued, “Over the next several months, the ability to bring some of your NFTs in, hopefully over time be able to mint things within that environment.”
Meta has yet to reveal how NFTs will be implemented, nor how they will work. However, one thing is sure: the NFT trend is increasing substantially, and Meta is also ready to take advantage of it.
Early this year, multiple reports circulated about Instagram’s work on NFTs. After Instagram’s CEO said the company is looking into NFTs to make them more accessible, Meta announced the possible integration of a feature that would enable users to display their NFTs on Facebook and Instagram profiles.
Instagram won’t be the first major social network with an NFT integration. As of early this year, Twitter introduced a feature allowing users to set their own NFTs as their profile picture.
