Alistair MacDonald, from one of the world’s oldest whiskey families, has announced the creation of Barley Nectar, the world’s first NFT-backed whisky distillery and club, with the goal of creating a tech-savvy whisky community.
Through Barley Nectar, members can build a new distillery from the ground up and create the bottles they want. As a result of this interactive relationship, members are able to decide how the company should be led and what the final product should be.
Then mixing whiskey with NFTs may appear to be a solution to the high cost of trade and guaranteed provenance. NFTs would assist assure provenance because the stock, trade, and pricing history are all 100% transparent on NFT platforms.
The NFTs, dubbed “Angel’s Share,” are priced at $8,000 apiece and are limited to 400 units. The Angel’s Share NFT membership provides Angel’s Share NFT holders with two key benefits:
- 12 exclusive whisky bottles paired with corresponding NFTs – Every month for a year, ‘Angel’s Share’ NFT holders vote on a new whiskey barrel from one of Scotland’s most popular distilleries to finish and bottle. They will then be given a redeemable bottle NFT, which will entitle them to a real bottle from each barrel. The bottle NFT holder can then choose between redeeming the NFT and drinking the bottle, keeping it, or transferring ownership to someone else.
- A barrel of whisky – The Angel’s Share digital tokens are accompanied by the rights to a full physical barrel of whisky (200L, roughly 280 bottles) and 10 years of free storage from their own distillery upon completion, as well as access to bespoke tours of Scottish distilleries and inclusion in their member-only auction events.
Private sales are already underway and will continue until the end of September. Public sales will be held from October 1 through December 31.
