Yuga Labs, the company that acquired the popular CryptoPunks non-fungible token (NFT) collection in 2022, seems to be giving up on its plans to expand the project with its new initiative.
On May 20, CryptoPunks officially unveiled details of a new NFT series titled Super Punk World. This series includes 500 hybridized 3D sculptures that challenge traditional notions of race and gender.
Created by New York painter Nina Abney, the artworks are intended to honor the “irreverent, early-internet origins of the CryptoPunks project” and were slated for sale via a Dutch auction format on May 29.
Artistic Vision vs. Community Expectations
What seemed like a creative leap forward quickly ignited a firestorm of criticism. Critics attacked the art style, the attempt to reimagine an iconic project, and accusations of being “woke” due to the emphasis on race and gender.
Some collectors expressed dissatisfaction with Yuga Labs’ attempt to expand the original CryptoPunks collection.
“Punks clearly don’t want this attached to the project,” expressed a user on X under the post unveiling details about the Super Punk World NFT collection.
“Ok maybe Yuga wasn’t the best steward for this,” wrote another, with yet another commenting, “There’s still time to delete this and forget it ever happened.” Of the over 2,000 comments the post received, the majority were critical.

The delicate balance between creative vision and community expectations became a tightrope, and Yuga Labs found itself teetering on the edge.
Shift in Priorities
Following the criticism, Yuga Labs CEO Greg Solano released a statement outlining the team’s vision. The goal was to partner with renowned artists like Abney to bridge the gap between Web3 and traditional art, providing them with an opportunity to explore and answer the question, “What does punk mean to you?”
Solano declared that Yuga Labs would step away from the CryptoPunks project. “Yuga will no longer touch punks. They will just be decentralized and preserved on the blockchain,” he wrote.
The new focus will be on assisting museums and institutions in obtaining CryptoPunk NFTs and enlightening audiences about this collection.
As part of this, Super Punk World NFTs will only be made available to holders of Super Cool World — Abney’s first and main NFT collection.
