NFL Rivals, a Web3 game licensed by the National Football League (NFL) and the NFL Players Association (NFLPA), has surpassed $5 million in non-fungible token (NFT) sales volume.
Launched in April 2023 by Mythical Games, the game allows players to step into the role of an NFL head coach, building and leveling up their teams. Within the game, players can collect, own, and trade digital assets and cards, which provide access to real-life perks and in-game rewards.
By September 2023, five months after its release, NFL Rivals had already reached $1 million in NFT sales volume. Just three months later, at the end of the year, the game had hit the $2 million mark.
Despite fluctuations in the NFT market, the game’s growth has continued unabated. Recent data from CryptoSlam shows that NFL Rivals generated over $915,000 in NFT sales volume over the past 30 days — a 94% increase compared to the previous month. This brought the game’s total sales volume from $4 million to $5 million.
Some of the highest-selling NFTs include those featuring Tyreek Hill and Jason Kelce, which have fetched prices ranging from $2,000 to $4,000.
The increase in trading volume may be linked to preparations for the upcoming 2024 NFL season, the league’s 105th, which is set to kick off on September 5, 2024.
NFL Rivals is not the NFL’s first venture into the Web3 space. In February 2023, the league entered the Roblox metaverse with a virtual concert and the Super NFL Tycoon game. That same month, the NFL collaborated with Reddit to create themed collectible avatars to commemorate Super Bowl LVII.
Additionally, in 2022, the NFL and NFLPA teamed up with Dapper Labs to launch NFL ALL DAY, a platform for digital video highlight NFTs.
