Kyushu Railway Company (JR Kyushu), a member of the Japan Railways Group, has unveiled its plan to use non-fungible tokens (NFTs) as a means of enhancing the customer experience.
The NFTs will be launched on Astar Network, which is Japan’s most popular smart contract platform. By utilizing these tokens, passengers will be able to enjoy additional benefits while also keeping a record of their travel experiences.
The project is set to commence in July 2023, with the NFTs being categorized into different types, each offering unique advantages. Depending on the type of NFT held by riders, they may be eligible for additional benefits and exclusive access to limited-edition NFTs.
To showcase this innovative concept, JR Kyushu has already begun distributing a complimentary NFT during the Blockchain Expo in Tokyo, which started on May 10 and concludes today, May 12. This NFT showcases the new Nishi Kyushu Shinkansen, a high-speed rail line in Japan.
The adoption of blockchain technology by the transportation industry is a clear indication of its commitment to improving existing systems and delivering a heightened and memorable customer experience.
Notably, other companies have joined this movement. For example, in March, Flybondi partnered with TravelX to introduce flight tickets as NFTs, bringing forth benefits such as increased flexibility, transparency, and security. Furthermore, Emirates Airline revealed its intention last year to enter the metaverse and introduce their own NFTs.
