KEY POINTS
Paris Match, a French magazine considered one of the world’s best outlets for photojournalism, is auctioning 75 photos from its archives as non-fungible tokens (NFTs).
This initiative is being carried out in partnership with Focus Bloc, a platform specializing in vintage photography NFTs.
The auction features notable photos, including a September 1977 image of the famous Catalan artist Salvador Dalí in his extravagant villa in Cadaquès, captured by Benjamin Auger.
Another photograph is of Louis-Ferdinand Céline at 63, taken by François Pagès in Céline’s Meudon home. Also included is a 1973 image of Jane Birkin with her ex-husband Serge Gainsbourg at Chez Regine, photographed by Jean-Claude Deutsch.
The collection also includes images of Jean Seberg and Romain Gary, Jerry Lewis, and Fernand Raynaud, among others.
These photos are currently up for auction on SuperRare, with starting bids set at 0.3 ETH, roughly equivalent to $1,033 each. NFT buyers will also receive a numbered paper print of the photo, shipped for free.
This marks Paris Match’s first foray into the NFT space. However, other magazines and photographic websites have previously explored similar initiatives to revive their archived images through NFTs.
In 2022, Magnum Photos celebrated its 75th anniversary by releasing three NFT collections featuring images from its extensive archives. Similarly, last year, Getty Images teamed up with Candy Digital to launch the ’70s Music & Culture NFT collection, showcasing images from the 1970s era from Getty’s archives.
