The BBC, also known as the British Broadcasting Corporation, has submitted trademark applications suggesting that it plans to expand into the metaverse and the realm of non-fungible tokens (NFTs).
Specifically, the trademarks were filed for the logo of Doctor Who, a popular British science fiction TV series that has been broadcasted by the BBC since 1963.
The applications, submitted to the USPTO on May 1, 2023, suggest that the broadcaster is planning to offer NFTs that use blockchain technology, as well as virtual reality software and wearable digital devices.
The news was announced on Twitter by Michael Kondoudis, a trademark attorney who specializes in Web3-related filings.
The BBC joins a growing number of media companies that have filed trademarks in order to establish a presence in the Web3 space. TIME magazine submitted similar applications last year, which led to collaborations with The Sandbox to develop “TIME Square,” its first-ever metaverse location, and a partnership with another NFT creator to produce a children’s series based on “The Littles” NFT collection.
The BBC has yet to comment on its plans for Doctor Who in the metaverse and NFT space. However, the trademark applications suggest that the broadcaster is looking to capitalize on the growing interest in digital assets and virtual worlds.
